An excellent opportunity for an innovative, commercially astute, collaborative Head of HR Operations to join a successful education-focused, traded service developing HR services and providing advice and support to schools, academies and other educational establishments across Birmingham and the West Midlands.
Birmingham City Council is an ambitious, commercially-driven, modernising authority, looking to build on its strengths as it works towards achieving financial stability. The Council’s commercial HR trading services business currently supports a portfolio of 330 schools, academies and other education bodies with ambitious growth plans over the next three years.
You will lead and manage our existing portfolio and a FTE team of around 30 HR professionals, currently with 6 direct reports, that includes specialists in terms and conditions, employment contracts, transactional HR, policy development and a HR recruitment team. You will have the experience to quickly undertake a skills and resource audit in order to link the operational delivery to that required of the trading service.
To be successful in this position you will have a demonstrable track record of managing, leading, motivating and inspiring a similar team to success in the delivery of HR services and/or projects. As part of the interview process you will be assessed on how you embody the Council’s core values and behaviours.
You should be experienced and confident working in partnership with senior decision-makers with demonstrable success of building good relationships, both internally and externally with customers.
Our Head of HR Operations will have ideally worked in a similar role, providing operational leadership and managing a substantial HR team serving a large customer base, preferably within an educational and/or commercial setting. You will have sound experience of developing successful HR services and in providing client-friendly, customer-focused HR operational processes, policies and procedures. You should also have a good working knowledge of one or more HR IT systems and the regulatory/legislative requirements relating to HR operations, data maintenance, use and management.
You will require a good knowledge of employment contracts and the various terms and conditions inherent within the schools-based education sector or show a clear track record of being able to rapidly learn, interpret and advise on such matters in a demanding environment. You will be used to negotiating service standards with customers, managing service delivery to ensure a high quality, timely service operating within agreed budgets, legislative requirements and other quality standards. You will also have a strong track record of managing individuals and teams who are focused and empowered to deliver excellent results that drive high levels of customer satisfaction.
You will have a track record that demonstrates your ability to build and maintain a good rapport with all key stakeholders including representatives of trade unions and professional associations. You must have a good understanding of UK employment law and a professional CIPD or equivalent qualification/experience is essential.
